Some collaborations feel like they come out of nowhere, while others feel like an inevitability. “365” is the latter, but that’s not to say it’s any less worth listening to. Zedd and Katy Perry on a song together sounds like an A&R executive’s wet dream, and for good reason; “365” is the fun, harmless electro Zedd has been releasing the past couple years mixed with the vocal delivery of Witness-era Perry. What’s not to love? There’s no reason not to pursue, and I’m sure the charts will agree in the coming months.
Over a metallic-sounding drum machine and effervescent clicks, Perry whispers sweet nothings like “baby, you got me changing/24/7, I want you here” to her partner. Though the sentiments border on obsession as the song progresses, it’s the singer’s monotone delivery in the chorus that really ups the creepy ante; hearing “Are you gonna be the one that’s on my mind?/365, all the time?” in the most dispassionate voice is jarring, to say the least, but it surprisingly works. The bridge is where Perry sounds the most animated, but even that only gets a couple of short runs in before she returns to her preset vocal. It’s a rather simple, lowkey affair for both artists, but a welcomed entry into their respective discographies, nonetheless.
