Review: “Sex Talk” — Megan Thee Stallion

The name on everyone’s lips has been Megan Thee Stallion for awhile now, ever since her Tina Snow mixtape dropped at the end of last year. Over the course of ten tracks, the rapper proved that she was a newcomer that would not be just a flash in the pan; her countless freestyles have only continued to prove her incredible talents. “Sex Talk” is her first release since the hype machine came calling, and it does not disappoint. Over a menacing bassline, breathy moans that punctuate every bar, and a chorus that recalls the cadence of Cardi B’s “Bartier Cardi,” the rapper explains just what she wants from her partner when they get to the bedroom to marvelous effect.

Things are spelled out quite clearly in the opening line: “Boy, you know you need to come give me that dick.” It only gets more explicit from there (thank god), with the rapper making sure the object of her desire knows exactly what she needs to be properly satisfied. Some of the bars here are particularly inventive, including — but certainly not limited to — “got more milkshakes than Kelis” and “bitch, I got green like I’m Buttercup.” It’s a testament to her abilities that she squeezes all of these lyrics into just over two minutes; sure, her flow is hurried, but speeding through three fully-formed verses and three choruses isn’t something your average spitter can do. As the already established frontrunner for the next generation of rap girls, “Sex Talk” proves that Megan Thee Stallion has much more to offer than some of her mumbling peers, male or female.
