Review: “Shameless” — Camila Cabello

Welcome to the world of Romance. Teasing the release of her forthcoming second album, it was anyone’s guess if Camila Cabello would stick to the successful Latin sound she fostered for her self-titled debut or explore uncharted territory for the singer. Upon the release of dual lead singles “Shameless” and “Liar,” the answer is a mixture of both; while prior single “Señorita” and “Liar” rely on Cabello’s tried-and-true formula, “Shameless” is an ominous track that sits well with the pop production of 2019. Backed by a incessant beat composed of strummed guitar and swirling, dark synths, the singer pleads with her partner to reciprocate the intensity of her feelings.

“Don’t speak, no, don’t try/it’s been a secret for the longest time” opens the track, Cabello’s distinct voice coming through clear with minimal instrumentation behind it. As the singer progresses through her emotions in time with the song itself — from almost unfazed to desperate by the time we reach the chorus — the production picks up speed before culminating in the blown out hook: “right now I’m shameless/screamin’ out my lungs for it” she cries, her voice layered and processed with a lo-fi filter in the post-chorus to capture just how badly she needs the subject to return her affections. The rest of “Shameless” follows this through line with vaguely interesting lyrics, but its soundscape proves Cabello has created something intriguing with Romance.
